183 R&D - Product Development Engineer (183 R&D)

Location: Southern, CA 

Job Responsibilities: 

Primary Responsibilities

1. R&D: Independently investigate new concepts/process/test as assigned:

            a. Perform preliminary research.

            b. Devise new product concepts and design prototypes.

            c. Manage procurement of prototypes: SLA, CNC machining, etc.

            d. Perform engineering tests, analyze results, and write report.

            e. Make recommendations.

2. Vendor interface:

            a. Interface with current vendors: production planning/order coordination to insure on-time product delivery.

            b. Identify, investigate, and assist in qualification of new vendors.

3. Project management:

            a. Create project plan under supervision of manager.

            b. Maintain project plan.

4. Analyze and recommend improvements (design, process) to existing products. 

Requirements: 

1. Engineering degree: B.S. or M.S. mechanical, biomechanical, and/or plastic engineering.

2. Solid analytical and problem solving skills.

3. Self-starter; able to work under minimal supervision and with minimal direction.

4. Experience in working with cross-functional teams.

5. Design, prototyping, and/or testing experience.

6. Experience generating and modifying SolidWorks drawings.

7. Experienced with drafting and tolerancing methods to ensure that engineering specifications are complete.

8. Knowledge of manufacturing processes and machine shop operation.

9. Experience interacting with contract manufacturing partners.

10. Some experience/exposure/understanding of project management.

11. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

12. A passion for working across multiple projects in a fast paced environment.

13. Up to 20% travel. 

Preferred: 

1. Design experience in R&D environment.

2. Medical device experience desirable (FDA QSR & ISO 13485).

3. Both large company and/or small company/start-up experience.

4. Patent holder or familiar with IP issues.

5. Experience interacting with physician customers and sales representatives in the field; comfortable in an OR setting.

6. Experience using or be proficient in Microsoft Project.
