14th Month A Critical Inflection Point For Executive Retention

Corporate talent management executives have identified a decision marker exactly 14 months into an executive’s new leadership role as a critical turning point at which their organization’s ability to retain the individual hinges. ExecuNet research reveals that executives are staying in new management positions only for about 35 months and that many begin to feel their excitement waning and dissatisfaction beginning to creep in after only 14 months. That suggests that while many corporate employers are putting more resources on management pipeline development they may not be doing enough to help new executives visualize how their career will progress within the organization if they meet or exceed performance expectations. But disillusionment about personal growth potential isn’t the only reason executives begin to wonder whether the grass is greener elsewhere, as this chart demonstrates.
